JAMES E. PETE, DBA Biography
My Anishinaabe (Indian) name is Guyaushk (Seagull), am a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, from the Eagle Clan, have two sons, ten grandchildren, with four great grandchildren.
November 6, 1992, is when I had the courage and strength to begin my journey into sobriety. My journey is a combination of Anishinaabeg and other Native teachings, learning, and practicing that has helped me maintain my sobriety. It is also a combination of other religious beliefs, as well as support from family, relatives, friends, and other.
I served on the Red Cliff Tribal Council, in 1982-1984, and from July 2010 to November 2011. In addition to serving as a Council member, I also served as the Vice-Chairperson and Tribal Treasurer.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Master’s degree in Organizational Management, and a Doctorate in Business Administration. I serve(d) as an Adjunct Faculty member for Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College, St. Cloud University, DQ-University, and with the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
My Doctoral Project, entitled “NATIVE AMERICAN/INDIAN TRIBAL ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP: UNDERSTANDING THE PAST, LIVING IN THE PRESENT, DESIGNING THE FUTURE FOR TRIBAL ORGANIZATIONS AND LEADERSHIP,” concentrates on the encouragement of integration of traditional beliefs and philosophies into the Tribal Organization.
I worked for the Federal Government, with Bureau of Indian Affairs for 5 years and Indian Health Services for 6 years. During a time when there was the effort to reduce the number of Federal employees, I opted for the “Buy-Out” in 1994 and utilized the monetary incentive to begin GUYAUSHK AND ASSOCIATES, a Tribal Management Consulting business, in October 1995.
I also have a number of years, working in the Tribal setting, in management and administrative areas. This includes being associated with the LCO College, since June 2003, as an Adjunct Faculty, assisting with various projects, and serving as the Director of the Red Cliff Outreach Site.
