Ben Jacobs and Matt Chandra are co-owners of Tocabe: An American Indian Eatery based in Denver Colorado. The restaurant first opened its doors in December 2008. Ben and Matt added a second location in 2015 and food truck in 2016. Tocabe is the only American Indian owned and operated restaurant in Metro Denver focusing on Native cuisine. The restaurant setting is a clean, warm, open space with connections to American Indian cultural elements, infused with a contemporary atmosphere.

Tocabe takes its origin from Grayhorse: An American Indian Eatery, established in downtown Denver in 1989 by the Jacobs family. The Jacobs are tribal members of the Osage Nation. Tocabe uses some of the same recipes from Grayhorse and has expanded on Osage family recipes along with being ingredient driven to create their take on American Indian cuisine.

Ben and Matt have also worked with the USDA and Food Distribution Programs on Indian Reservations. They travel to tribal communities to learn about their traditional foods, what’s important to them, and bring those experiences back into the restaurant. Food is about people, place and stories which is what Ben and Matt attempt to share through their work and travels.

In 2021 with the help of their team, Matt and Ben launched Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace. Tocabe’s marketplace is an online resource helping further the growth of the Native and Indigenous food system and supply chain. Tocabe sources from Native-owned ingredient producers which include Ramona Farms, Bow and Arrow Brands, Seka Hills and Red Lake Nation, Navajo Pride Foods and Ziibimijwang Inc.
